Abstract

The digital landscape has experienced a paradigm shift with the proliferation of Social Media Influencers (SMIs), individuals who possess the ability to shape consumer sentiments and brand interactions. While the impact of influencers on consumer behaviour is well-documented, the underlying mechanisms that drive users to transition from content consumers to prolific content creators require deeper examination. This conceptual paper explores the intrinsic, extrinsic, and social motivations that propel influencers to generate content. By understanding these drivers, businesses and communication strategists can forge more authentic, effective collaborations and navigate the complexities of the creator economy. This study specifically examines how the delicate balance between internal passions and external rewards directly dictates content quality and perceived legitimacy. When intrinsic motivations dominate, influencers naturally cultivate authentic personas and unique visual aesthetics that strengthen audience bonds and foster long-term trustworthiness. Conversely, an over-reliance on extrinsic financial incentives triggers aesthetic fatigue, erodes creator credibility, and diminishes the persuasive power of product recommendations. Influencers face a perpetual challenge in reconciling commercial obligations with their foundational creative passions. For brands, navigating this dynamic requires moving beyond superficial vanity metrics like follower counts to achieve true behavioural and motivational alignment. Strategic business communication must evolve to prioritize value-aligned partnerships, matching campaigns with a creator’s core altruistic or artistic goals. Furthermore, protecting creator autonomy ensures that commercial integrations feel organic to the established audience. Ultimately, managing influencer relations through a motivational framework transforms corporate promotions into authentic narratives, offering actionable strategies for sustainable consumer engagement in the modern marketplace.
