Abstract

This study explores the transformation of Sang Kancil folktales into studio-based visual art practice through the development of Kancil Attributes (KA) as an emergent conceptual framework. It is grounded in practice-based research informed by autoethnography (Chang, 2008) and iconographic theory (Panofsky, 1972), with interpretive support from visual culture discourse the research adopts iterative studio phases of analysis, interpretation, and reflection to generate visual knowledge through practice. Findings indicate a clear progression from literal narrative representation to symbolic and conceptual abstraction, where anthropomorphic characters and everyday objects are reconfigured to express themes of power, intelligence, manipulation, and social hierarchy. Four KA attributes are identified: Description, Investigative Identification, Symbolization of Knowledge, and Stylization of Knowledge. The study positions KA as a structured methodological model for visualizing folklore into contemporary visual and critical art discourse.
