Sampul kaset dan CD (Compact Disk) merupakan hal yang tidak bisa dipisahkan dalam bagain industri musik saat ini. Ungkapan bahasa rupa atau visual dalam suatu sampul kaset & CD musik sudah menjadi salah satu bagian penting yang tidak dapat dipisahkan. Unsur ilustrasi visual dalalam kaset dan CD menjadi pesan awal dalam suatu album musik yang mewakili seluruh materi yang ada didalam musik yang disajikan. Ilustrasi sampul musik death metal merupakan salah satu jenis musik yang sarat akan ungkapan visual yang ditampilkan dengan teknik dan gaya ilustrasi. Band-band atau kelompok musik death metal di Indonesia menjadi salah satu contoh yang menampilkan ungkapan ilustrasi visual dalam desain sampul kaset dan CD nya. Visualisasi ilustrasi yang sarat makna mewakili ungkapan dalam menyajikan maksud dari isi dan materi lirik maupun musik yang ditampilkan. Berdasarkan ketertarikan ini, penulis kemudian melakukan suatu penelitian tentang makna dan relasi ilustrasi visual yang terungkap dalam kaset dan CD jenis music death metal di Indonesia.
