Abstract

Malay traditional kuih represents an important aspect of Malaysia’s cultural heritage, embodying historical, social, and aesthetic values that have been passed down through generations. However, the increasing influence of globalisation and digital media has shifted younger generations’ preferences toward modern and global food trends, placing traditional delicacies at risk of cultural neglect. This study explores the potential of motion graphics usage, as a contemporary visual medium to reintroduce and preserve the cultural significance of Malay traditional kuih. This research examines the cultural role of kuih across social classes, compares Malaysian dessert consumption practices with those of other cultures, and investigates the changing relationship between youth and traditional food practices. Zakaria Ali’s theory of Malay aesthetics was chosen as a theoretical framework to guide the visual representation of kuih, ensuring that elements used are maintained in the design process. With a motion graphics approach, this research contributes to the discourse on digital cultural preservation by demonstrating how modern visual media can function as an effective tool for enhancing cultural awareness, appreciation, and continuity among contemporary audiences.
