Mak Yong is the Malay dance-theatre, which is the Intangible Cultural Heritage as listed by UNESCO, but is increasingly losing its popularity due to modernisation, less hands-on instruction, and a decline in visits by viewers. Conventional methods of capturing it tend to overlook the entire embodied, performative, and multi-sensory feel that characterises Mak Yong. This paper will provide a concise survey of the literature on the application of Mixed Reality (MR) and other immersive technologies to preserve intangible cultural heritage, with a specific focus on the case of creative motion design in Mak Yong. According to the PRISMA 2020 structure, the author filtered through large scholarly databases, selected studies, and ultimately chose ten articles, which we examined in detail. The findings indicate that MR technologies such as motion capture, facial animation, immersive environments, and metaverse platforms can be largely utilized to enhance cultural documentation, accessibility, and engagement among the audience. However, challenges related to authenticity, embodiment, technological limitations, and ethical considerations remain. The review concludes that MR is most effective as a complementary tool that supports cultural education, awareness, and continuity rather than replacing live performances. This study contributes to the body of research on MR applications for Southeast Asian intangible cultural heritage and provides insights for future culturally sensitive and ethically informed MR-based preservation initiatives for Mak Yong.
