Mediating Islam in Discourse of Identity Politics on Kompas.com and Republika.co.id
Abstract
Islam has become a major discourse in the political constellation in the country, although this cannot be interpreted as a torch that is illuminating the archipelago. In this context, the mass media has an important role to play in mediating Islam. The juxtaposition of Islam and identity politics is not only a topic of discussion on social media and television media, but it has also become a field of discourse for online media. Mediating Islam is the subject matter of Religious Studies related to the relationship between religion, humans and their natural identity, and the increasingly complex life of contemporary society. This study aims to describe texts that mediate Islam in the discourse of identity politics in Kompas.com and Republika.co.id ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election. In this study, the authors use qualitative research type, Critical Theory paradigm, Religious Studies approach, and M.A.K. Halliday Social Semiotics research method. In conclusion, online media no longer has a role in mediating multiculturalism nor does online media have a role in mediating Islam. In addition, online media also perpetuates the discourse of identity politics, by positioning Islam as an object.
